From Atheist Executive to Faith-Based Leadership Coach

How two health crises transformed my understanding of control and revealed what truly matters

My Background

I'm a retired business executive with a Ph.D. in engineering and decades of experience in senior executive leadership roles across multiple industries. Throughout my corporate career, I brought an analytical, evidence-based perspective to everything I did—an approach I now apply to matters of faith and personal transformation.

But my real education didn't happen in boardrooms or engineering labs. It happened in hospital beds.

The First Crisis: 1993

My journey from atheism to faith began in 1993 when I was completely paralyzed by Guillain-Barré syndrome. As someone who didn't believe in God, I made my first desperate prayer to a God I wasn't sure existed.

That prayer led to a miraculous recovery that defied medical expectations—I went from being told I probably wouldn't walk for at least a year to running five miles per day within two months.

The Forgotten Years

After my recovery, I threw myself back into career advancement while neglecting the spiritual awakening I'd experienced. For years, I focused on climbing the corporate ladder, pushing aside the promise I'd made in that ICU bed.

Everything changed when my teenage son became the first person in our family to embrace Christianity. Watching his transformation drew me back to faith and led me to a deeper relationship with God and active service in church ministry.

The Second Crisis: 2020

In 2020, I faced a second major health crisis when I was diagnosed with throat cancer that had metastasized to my lymph nodes. This time, however, I approached the battle not as a desperate atheist making bargains with an unknown God, but as someone with a mature relationship with Him.

My cancer journey became an opportunity to apply biblical principles in real-time and deepen my understanding of God's character. Today, I'm cancer-free with minimal lasting side-effects from treatment.

My Calling Today

I've dedicated this phase in my life to fulfilling the commitment I made in that ICU bed in 1993—to share my story so others facing crises can find hope and healing through a relationship with God.

But I discovered that sharing my story was just the beginning. People needed more than inspiration—they needed a practical way to navigate their own challenges and transitions.

My Church Service and Coaching Work

I serve on my church board and lead growth groups focused on helping people grow closer to God. My volunteer church work began at Saddleback Church, where I learned under Pastor Rick Warren and volunteered to help hundreds of new members discover their unique design.

As a Maxwell-certified leadership coach and certified parenting and family coach, I work with individuals facing various life challenges, helping them discover how faith can transform their approach to difficulties.

My engineering background ensures I focus on real results and proven methods, while my personal transformation provides the foundation for understanding that our deepest answers come from discovering how God specifically designed each of us.

My Unique Approach

Through my three-phase process—Admit, (Re-)Discover, and (Re-)Build—I help people stop hiding behind false premises about control and success, rediscover their authentic God-given design, and rebuild their lives around that truth.

I work with people at different places in their spiritual journey, from committed Christians to those who are simply open to exploring how God might have designed them specifically.

Personal Life

My wife and I live in Arizona and are blessed with 6 children and eight grandchildren (soon to be ten). When I'm not writing, coaching, or volunteering at church, we enjoy the Arizona desert where I find the peace of God in natural beauty.

My Writing

"The Desperate Bargain" is my first book, telling the complete story of my transformation and providing practical guidance for others facing health crises. I have plans for additional works addressing fear, faith, vocation and other aspects of spiritual growth through life's challenges.
